Beaches and Turtles
Patara is one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey: 18km long and totally unspoiled.
The sand is almost white, the water is crystal clear and beach is a nesting ground of the ‘Caretta-caretta’ turtles.
This is the reason why the environment is protected and preserved in Patara.
The second nearest beach is Kaputas. It resembles a tourquoise aquarium surrounded by white sand.
In both beaches it is possible to rent sunbeds and umbrellas.
Sand dunes
The sand dunes, on the edge of pine forests and on the beach, are prime locations to see Patara’s sunsets.
Dunes are formed by wind storms and change shape following the will of nature.
Sand dunes and the lake behind the beach are protected areas for rare birds.
Taurus Mountains and Xanthos River
Patara is located in a valley between the Taurus mountains, which is ideal for short walks.
The Xanthos River had a key role in Patara’s history.
The entrance of Patara harbour was gradually blocked throughout the centuries by the deposits carried by the river.
This process caused Patara to lose its sea trade.
These days the river is ideal for canoeing.
